Overview

Lee Bowyer was never an easy player to summarise.

At his best he was dynamic, aggressive, technically gifted and capable of deciding a football match.

He was also surrounded by controversy.

And that contradiction is part of his Leeds story.

The young Londoner

Bowyer joined Leeds from Charlton Athletic in 1996 and became an increasingly important figure as the club rebuilt during the late 1990s.

He made 265 appearances for Leeds and scored 55 goals. He was also voted Leeds Player of the Year in both 1998-99 and 2000-01.

A midfielder who attacked

Bowyer was not a conventional holding midfielder.

He had an instinct for arriving in the penalty area and could carry the ball through midfield at speed.

In the 2000-01 Champions League campaign he was central to Leeds' run to the semi-finals.

His goal against Anderlecht, for example, came after he had produced an outstanding performance despite the distractions surrounding the team.

The golden generation

Bowyer belonged to a Leeds side full of young talent.

Radebe.

Woodgate.

Ferdinand.

Kewell.

Smith.

Viduka.

Batty.

And, of course, Bowyer.

Together they produced one of the most exciting Leeds teams of the modern era.

The controversy

Bowyer's Leeds career cannot honestly be told without mentioning the off-field controversies that surrounded him.

The Mill Hill assault case became a major distraction during the 2000-01 season, while Bowyer remained an important member of the side.

It is one of the uncomfortable contradictions of his Leeds career: remarkable football existed alongside serious controversy.

Why Lee Bowyer mattered

Greatness in football isn't always neat.

Bowyer was not universally loved.

But he was enormously important.

He played a major part in Leeds reaching a Champions League semi-final, won two Player of the Year awards and scored goals that remain part of the memories of the period.

His legacy contains brilliance and controversy in equal measure.

That doesn't make it a lesser story.

It makes it a more interesting one.
