Overview
Some Leeds United line-ups are remembered because of individual superstars.
The midfield of Strachan, Batty, Speed and McAllister is remembered because all four fitted together.
Four different players
Gordon Strachan brought leadership, experience and goals.
David Batty brought ball-winning, intelligence and an understanding of tempo.
Gary Speed brought energy and movement.
Gary McAllister brought passing, set pieces and attacking quality.
There was very little overlap between their strengths.
That was the point.
The final piece
McAllister arrived from Leicester City ahead of the 1990-91 First Division season.
Leeds had already been promoted as champions and now needed to prove they could survive at the top level.
Instead, they finished fourth.
Strachan had a particularly strong season and was named Footballer of the Year.
The midfield quartet was beginning to look like something special.
A perfect balance
The beauty of the midfield was its balance.
If Strachan moved forward, someone else could cover.
If Speed pushed into the opposition half, Batty could hold.
If Leeds needed control, McAllister could take responsibility for possession.
And when games became scrappy, there were few better combinations to have in the middle.
The title
The ultimate proof came in 1991-92.
Leeds became champions of the final First Division, and the four-man midfield was one of the foundations of the side.
Speed himself later described the quartet as one of the greatest midfield line-ups of the modern era.
Why it worked
The temptation with famous midfields is to count individual talent.
That isn't enough.
Four excellent players can still make a poor midfield if they want to occupy the same space.
This one worked because the pieces complemented each other.
That is what made it so difficult to replace.
Why this midfield matters
A great midfield does not necessarily contain four of the four most talented players.
It contains four players who make each other better.
Strachan, Batty, Speed and McAllister did exactly that.
And when Leeds won the title in 1992, they gave supporters a midfield that could defend, create, run, tackle, pass and score.
It genuinely had almost everything.
