Leeds become champions of England

The 1968-69 season delivered the prize Don Revie and his players had been chasing. Leeds United were crowned First Division champions for the first time, finishing ahead of Liverpool after a remarkable campaign in which they lost only two league matches.

A season built on defensive excellence

Leeds finished with 27 wins, 13 draws and just two defeats, collecting 67 points. They conceded only 26 goals and kept 25 clean sheets. The scale of the defensive achievement was extraordinary for a 42-game season. After a 5-1 defeat at Burnley in October, Leeds began a remarkable unbeaten sequence. Their 0-0 draw at Anfield against Liverpool on 28 April 1969 confirmed the championship.

The key players

Billy Bremner was the inspirational captain, while Jack Charlton and Norman Hunter formed the backbone of the defence. Johnny Giles provided control and intelligence in midfield, with Paul Madeley offering versatility. Eddie Gray, Peter Lorimer and Mick Jones supplied attacking quality. Jones finished as Leeds' league top scorer with 14 goals and the season's leading scorer with 17.

The highs and lows

The biggest setback was the 5-1 defeat at Burnley, but Leeds responded with an extraordinary unbeaten run. The 6-1 victory over Burnley later in the campaign was an emphatic response. The title was secured at Anfield against Liverpool, turning one of English football's great stadiums into the scene of Leeds' first championship celebration.

A beginning, not an ending

The 1968-69 title began Leeds' most celebrated era rather than completing it. The club would win another First Division title in 1973-74, the FA Cup in 1972 and the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1971, while repeatedly challenging for major honours in England and Europe.
